If you have not heard of Matheran, then it simply means you are not a mumbaite. For all mumbaikars surrounded by concrete jungles take off to a real jungle on top of a hill some 100 ks from Mumbai once in while. One has to do this you know, lest our lungs forget what pure air feels like.
Matheran has several points Duke's point, sunrise and sunset points to name a few and manmade lakes. You can ride horses to check out the various points if you are not inclined to walk. Hotels have mushroomed and I personally hate the market area. Aesthetically very unpleasnt. But go off into the trekking areas and then you truly feel refreshed.
